Residents of North Dakota are all about helping out good causes. North Dakota is one of the most charitable states in the country according to a new study.

The website SmartAsset looked at which states were the most charitable and North Dakota came in at No. 12.

SmartAsset based their rankings on the charitable contributions per 1,000 people, the value that volunteer time brings in per capita, the number of non-profits per 10,000 people and the median charitable contribution.

After crunching the numbers, each state was given a ranking.

North Dakota donates $457 per 1,000 residents, volunteer time brings in $657 per capita, the state has 79.1 non-profits per 10,000 people and the median charitable donation is $3,890.

Washington D.C. ranked No. 1 and rounding out the Top 25 was Vermont. SmartAsset did not list the bottom 25 states.
