North Dakota Has A Childcare Crisis, Experts Say
As a person who doesn't have any children, it's hard to imagine all the struggles a parent might experience each day. A recent report revealed that North Dakota parents might be struggling more than parents in other states.
According to PublicNewsService.org at least 14 counties meet less than 60 percent of the demand for childcare. Think about it, North Dakota is pretty rural, so childcare options are pretty limited. There might not be any daycares in your town. What do you do then?
Now, let's look at Head Start. The program helps low income families, but the source says it's lacking in North Dakota, as the report indicates that nearly half of rural communities don't have access to these programs.
Now, let's say your North Dakota city has plenty of child care options, okay, you have somewhere to take your kids, but can you afford it? In North Dakota, the annual cost of childcare is $12,000.
Experts who've authored this report are saying something needs to be done for our rural North Dakota communities to help bring down the cost of these services, but also to help supply them to our smaller cities. Do you agree that there is an issue here?
If you're curious, World Population Review did a study for 2026; they actually broke it down state-by-state and found out what parents are paying annually for childcare. States like Massachusetts and Minnesota have parents paying $26,000 a year. Seeing that might make you think ok, it could be worse, and maybe that's true, but that still doesn't mean we can't find a way to make it better for North Dakota families.
