North Dakota's cold climate may not appeal to some, but it was named one of the top five best states to retire in over those with warmer temperatures.

Although the popular place for a retiree to take up residency are states like Florida and California, Bankrate argues that states in the Midwest are a much better option.

The states included in the top five are:

  1. South Dakota
  2. Colorado
  3. Utah
  4. North Dakota
  5. Wyoming

To get these results, Bankrate analyzed weather, cost of living, crime, quality of health care, state and local taxes and general well-being equally.

The information collected showed that North Dakota has great health care and a low crime rate. On the other hand, Florida is ranked 39th on the list for lacking quality health care and having a high crime rate. North Dakota residents also have the highest level of general well-being in the United States.

This may not be enough to keep retirees from fleeing to warm weather, but it is definitely something to keep in mind!
