You read that right: a Turkish court has assigned a committee to decide whether the Lord of the Rings character Gollum is a good guy or a bad guy.

The outlandish decision was made by a judge overseeing the case of a doctor who is accused of insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by posting pics of the president beside ones of the fantasy fiction icon, comparing the two.

Defense attorney Hicran Danisman first tried defending her client's freedom of expression; when that yielded no results, she was forced to resort to arguing that Gollum is not a bad character, and therefore the comparison should not be considered insulting.

The judge ordered a group of psychologists, movie experts and others to deliberate the issue and make a ruling on whether Gollum is good or bad.

The accused, Bilgin Ciftci, could spend up to two years behind bars if convicted.
