VIDEO: Who Spray Painted the Jesus Statue in Fargo?
Last week, Valley News Live reported that a Jesus at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fargo was tagged. Jesus' face was spray painted black, but was quickly scrubbed down to remove the paint. I wrote a story, saying it may not be surprising that someone would do this, considering that Fargo's Catholic Diocese hid names of accused sexual offenders in the clergy. Get the story here.
Now, Valley News Live has obtained video of the Jesus statue's vandal. According to the video, the person strolled up to the statue at 3:24 AM on Saturday, April 17, 2021. It is seriously such a quick event, I am sure it could have easily been missed when looking through hours of video. In the video, you can see the person stroll up to the statue, do something in front of it, duck around to the back of the statue, and stroll out. Check out the video here.
There really has been a lot of vandalism and such happening throughout North Dakota and Minnesota. There was even a recent instance that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is now involved in. Valley News Live reports that a Moorhead mosque was vandalized with things like a spray painted swastika and a message that read "Death to Islam." The police departments in Moorhead, Dilworth, Fargo, West Fargo, and Horace came together on a post to denounce what happened. Police are also searching for this vandal as well. Valley News Live reports that the vandalism of the mosque happened during Ramadan, the most sacred month for Muslims.
I did not think it was surprising that a Fargo Catholic church was the target of backlash, because of all the news about sexual abuse throughout its history, AND because nothing was done about the reported abuse. But I wonder what could be the reasoning behind targeting a mosque in Moorhead, Minnesota?
