Al Bortke, the University of Mary's first ever athletic director died at CHI St. Alexius at the age of 78 on Sunday, September 20.

Bortke was the athletic director at U Mary for 35 years. He became the first the university ever had in 1973 and continued his roll through 2008. Not only was he the athletic director, Bortke was a beloved men's basketball coach from 1972-1989. He left to focus on his athletic director position with a 335-165 record.

The Marauders showed how much they appreciated Bortke in 2009. The university dedicated its new basketball floor to him. It is now known as the 'Al Bortke Court.'

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 25 at Church of Ascension followed by a vigil/rosary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, September 26 at 10 a.m., also at the Church of Ascension. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service.
