A list was just published of the healthiest and the unhealthiest states in the country. Common knowledge, North Dakotans LOVE to booze it up. Even with that bit of information, we're still a pretty healthy state compared to the rest of the nation.

The healthiest state in the country is Hawaii. The least healthiest state in the country is my home state of Louisiana.

The list was comprised by United Health Foundation. Here is the formula the foundation used to make up this years list-

They take five major factors into account: behaviors, such as smoking, excessive drinking, and drug deaths; community, including violent crime, on-the-job fatalities, and infectious disease; policies, including how many people lack health insurance, and percentage of children up-to-date on immunizations; healthcare, like the number of dentists and doctors available per capita; and outcomes, including measures on diabetes, cancer deaths, heart disease deaths, and more.

Other healthy states in the country include-

  1. Hawaii
  2. Vermont
  3. Massachusetts
  4. Minnesota
  5. New Hampshire
  6. Connecticut
  7. Utah
  8. Colorado
  9. Washington
  10. Nebraska

For the bottom of the list and you'll notice that most of the unhealthiest states are in the deep South. #47 West Virginia, #48 Arkansas, #49 Oklahoma and Louisiana at the bottom. The Delta South, where every meal has rice and gravy plus fried food. Desserts are a must and are served with thick cream! And the southern tradition of cold , sweet ice tea! It's soooo good! Not very healthy, but delicious!

North Dakota did very well coming in at #12.

First, the bad news: North Dakota has a higher prevalence of excessive drinking than any other state, at 25% of the population. It also ranks in the bottom 10 for obesity. But the news out of the Peace Garden State isn't all negative. North Dakotans report the fewest poor physical health days in the country. They also enjoy excellent air quality.

This is good news for the Peace Garden State. Clean air and excellent quality of life. We did slip a bit from year to year, compared to last year, NoDak dropped out of the top ten. Our rank last year was #9.
