According to WalletHub, the average student is in $37,000 of debt by the time they graduate, and there are 43.4 million people who've taken out loans as of 2022.

A survey was done by WalletHub, and what it found was actually pretty surprising. They looked at the average amount of student loan debt in each state, how many people have past due loan balances, and used nine other metrics to come up with these findings. So, let's dive in.
The Worst State For Student Loan Debt
Before we get into where North Dakota ranks, let's look at the worst state in the country. The state with the most student debt is West Virginia. The runner up in Pennsylvania, and you might be surprised to find out that South Dakota is the third worst state.
And The Best?
The state with the least student debt is Utah, then runner up is the District of Columbia.

Okay, okay I'll get to it. North Dakota doesn't rank well in this arena. sadly North Dakota is the 10th WORST state for student loan debt. Yikes!
