It's always exciting to see that notification pop up on your phone saying your package has been delivered. I don't do a lot of online shopping, but I recently ordered a few things from Amazon. As soon as I found out my package had been delivered, I rushed home to get it from my doorstep, because you never know - someone might see it and swipe it. The race to get there first is on.

Sadly, people steal packages from homes all the time. While most of us have cameras and Ring doorbells to help catch these porch pirates, that doesn't always do the trick.

Home and content specialists at iSelect created a Delivery Theft Index that identifies which states have the most porch pirate incidents. Unfortunately, North Dakota ranked pretty high - in the top ten. To compile this index, they examined risk factors such as online shopping levels, work-from-home rates, and broader theft statistics.

States with the Most Porch Pirates

1. District of Columbia

2. Colorado

3. Oregon

4. Montana

5. Louisiana

6. Arkansas

7. Illinois

8. North Dakota

9. North Carolina

10. Utah

Yes, there are seven states that ranked higher than we did, but being in the top ten out of 50 states is concerning and shows we absolutely have a problem.

So, what can you do to keep your packages safe? -You can require a signature for deliveries. Or, you can always have your important packages sent to work. Another option is to get a package delivery lockbox for your front door. While I know these solutions are frustrating and a little inconvenient, it's better than losing all of your stuff.
