Prince’s Legendary 1987 Concert Film ‘Sign o’ the Times’ to Air on Showtime
A rarely seen Prince concert film will get a proper airing on television thanks to Showtime. The cable network has acquired the late musician's Sign o’ the Times concert documentary and will premiere it on Sept. 16 at 9PM ET, according to Rolling Stone.
The concert film was originally shot as a companion piece to Prince's 1987 landmark double album of the same name. It was released in theaters in the late 1987 but wasn't a box office hit. The film did get a VHS run but it was never released on DVD. For nearly 30 years, the movie has remained out of print.
The 84-minute concert documentary was shot primarily at his own Paisley Park Studios and on tour in the Netherlands and Belgium. Prince performed several of his classic hits including the title track, “U Got the Look” (with Sheena Easton), “If I Was Your Girlfriend, “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" and a rendition of the fan-favorite classic, “Little Red Corvette.”
His band at the time featured both musicians the Revolution and the New Power Generation, plus Sheila E. played the drums for an extended solo set.
There's no word if Prince's Sign O' Times concert documentary will get a DVD and/or digital release.
