San Haven State Hospital Sits in Ruins 27 Years After Closing

The North Dakota Tuberculosis Sanitarium, located close to Dunseith, was first established in 1909 as a quarantine location for patients struggling to beat the debilitating condition. The peaceful scenic surroundings, together with the soothing dry air, made it the ideal place for TB patients to get better.

Later, the sanatorium was dubbed San Haven State Hospital and was a home for the developmentally disabled.

Today, the building sits in ruins after 27 years of neglect following its closure in 1987. Some even say it's haunted, though there seems to be little evidence of that, aside from its decidedly run-down and clearly deserted appearance.

Says former employee Ramona Lavallie:

It breaks your heart because you know what was here and nothing was done with it when the state closed it down. It's very disheartening to look at it.
