The US started their campaign for their first World Cup trophy against the team that has caused them a lot of problems over the last 2 World Cups. The Yanks didn't shy away from the challenge, scoring just 32 seconds into the match.

The match started calmly enough, with the US winning a throw in almost immediately. That's when the US Captain Clint Dempsey showed why he's one of the highest paid players in the MLS. Playing a nice 1-2 ball with Jermaine Jones, Clint rounds 2 more defenders and puts it in the back of the net. At 29 seconds officially, that is the quickest goal ever scored in a World Cup match.

A big blow to the US campaign came in the 21st minute with Forward Jozy Altidore pulled up on a sprinting run forward with an apparent hamstring injury. Early word on the injury is a strained hamstring. Jozy is slated to go through scans and a full medical workup tomorrow at the US camp in Sao Paulo. Another injury came in the 32nd minute when goal-scorer Clint Dempsey took a leg to the face, causing a bloody nose... possibly breaking it. Dempsey was patched up on the sidelines, and returned to the game a few minutes later. Matt Besler was subbed at the half as a precaution after showing signs of a possible hamstring injury.

With a 6-1-1 record when leading at the half of a World Cup match, the US was feeling pretty good about their chances to finally get the Ghanaian curse off of them. The second half was constant pressure from Ghana. The US was being torn apart by the runs forward, but Tim Howard was equal to anything the Black Stars could put on net. With few chances falling for the Yanks, it was a very defensive half. Ghana equalized in the 83rd minutes from a very good ball in the box to Ayew, who finished it clinically.

But it only took the US 3 minutes to put another in the back of the net. Graham Zusi whipped in a brilliant ball from a corner kick that found substitute John Brooks, who put it off his head and into the back of the net. John becomes the first substitute to score a goal for the US in a World Cup match.

And that's how it would end. The Yanks show the world that they have what it takes to win, and win however possible.
