Do You Have Your Winter Survival Kit Ready?
I don't hate the winter. In fact, I love the change of seasons and winter fashion, but it is frigid today. It's truly feeling like good ol' arctic North Dakota, and winter has only just begun. I grew up here and I still can't get a grip on how chilly it gets. I should have hit the autostart a couple more times before leaving for work. I just want to snuggle up under the covers with Disney+ and hot cocoa today.
But, like most everyone, I have bills to pay and I must go to work, rain or shine (snow, too). So, I bundled up in my Sorel boots and Eddie Bauer winter jacket and braved the cold. As I was driving, I thought about how unprepared I actually am for a North Dakota winter. I'm certain I don't even have jumper cables. I'm sure if my parents saw this, I'd get a lecture.
I am ill-prepared, and definitely need to invest in a "winter survival" kit. Since I love Pinterest, I went on an online search for DIY kits. I found good ideas for more than just a basic survival kit.
Below, I compiled a list of the items I like best for a survival kit:
- Jumper Cables
- First Aid Kit
- Water Bottles
- Hand/Foot Warmers
- Matches
- Non-Perishable Snacks
- Phone Charger (backup battery)
- Flares
- Flashlight
- Magazine, Cards, Travel Game, Etc.
- Small, Foldable Shovel
- Blankets
One can never be too prepared for a car situation in winter months. I also have learned to keep at least half a tank of gas in my car this time of year. Make sure you take all the safety precautions necessary when you're traveling this holiday season and all winter long.
