There are currently 19 states that require drivers to have only a single license plate. North Dakota may become the 20th.

A move from two required license plates to one may be a thing, as the state legislative committee has endorsed the idea. A recommendation for the movement to be passed is being pushed by the House Transportation Committee to the full House.

Convenience and gas store owners, as well as the North Dakota Peace Officers Association are opposed to moving to one license plate, as it would make it tougher to catch criminals and 'drive-offs' since the front plate is typically the first thing seen.

The bill was House Bill 1064 and was given a "do pass" recommendation to the full House.
