Valley City Semi Crash Releases Millions Of Bees
According to Valley News Live, around 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon (Thursday, May 28th), a crash occurred at a westbound merge on I94 (near mile marker 292). The crash involved a Kenworth semi-truck and a Chevy Silverado. The North Dakota Highway Patrol made the following statement.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado did not observe the Kenworth semi and made an improper lane change. To avoid a collision, the driver of the Kenworth semi took evasive action and swerved left. The semi’s driver-side tires entered the median before the driver attempted to steer back onto the roadway. The semi then rolled onto its passenger side.
Unfortunately, the truck had some precious cargo. The source says the truck was carrying between 600 and 800 beehives. The rollover led to the release of over two million bees. As you can imagine, this was a scary situation for the driver.
The driver's name has not been released, but multiple sources reported that it was a 55-year-old male. Reports also said that after the crash, the semi driver exited the vehicle, was attacked by hundreds of bees, and was stung several times. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to a post made by the North Dakota Highway Patrol, local beekeepers responded to the incident and helped recover and contain some of the bees. People living near the crash site were told by authorities to shelter in place if they had bee allergies. The portion of the interstate was closed for approximately 8 hours. NDHP says all lanes are now open.
