The Red River Valley, also known as the breadbasket of America is home to the poorest city in North Dakota.

According to an article on MoneyWise anyway.  The city of Wahpeton is the poorest town in the Peace Garden State.  Wahpeton is nestled along the banks of the Bois de Sioux River at its confluence with the Otter Tail River, which forms the Red River of the North.

The city of Wahpeton was founded in 1869 and has a population of just under 8,000 people.

According to Wikipedia, Wahpeton is home to several large manufacturing plants including, Woodcraft Industries, WCCO Belton, Min-Dak Farmers Cooperative, Cargill, Doosan/Bobcat, and a few others.

Even with that industry and all that fertile farmland the city of Wahpeton only has a median household income of just over $45,000 in Wahpeton.  The city of Wahpeton is known for a couple of big things.  It has one of the best zoos in the state Chahinkapa Zoo.  You will definitely get a workout seeing all of the animals in this zoo.

Speaking of big, Wahpeton is also home to the "Wahpper" the world's biggest Catfish.  Check out these dimensions.  40 feet in length, 12 feet high, and weighs over 5,000 pounds.  Now, that's a whopper or "Wahpper" as the folks from Wahpeton say.

The richest city in North Dakota according to the article is Beulah.

This is coal country with some rich farmland mixed in.  The motto of Beulah is "small town appeal, big city looks."  Beulah is home to just over 3,000 people with a median household income of just over $99,000.

Plenty of recreational activities near Beulah, including Lake Sakakawea and some world-class pheasant and big game hunting.
