With a new year comes new laws. Here are some you will see take effect in North Dakota.

[New] North Dakota Laws 2024

According to Fox 9, a couple of gender-related bills will take effect at the start of the new year. Some of these will restrict transgender girls and women from participating in school sports teams that match their gender identity.

The source also says that another law will put restrictions on amending birth certificates and not allow transgender individuals to use showers or restrooms matching their gender identity in correctional facilities and public college dormitories.

According to PayRent.com a new law about landlords and tenants will be taking effect at the start of the year. The new law will restrict security deposits to no more than one month's rent.

Landlords will also not be allowed to withhold a security deposit solely based on eviction.

These are just some of the many laws/changes coming in North Dakota in 2024.

Minnesota's Gun Confiscation Law

According to WJON News, a new "Red Flag" gun law will go into effect in Minnesota at the start of the year. It's known as an "Extreme risk protection order." Essentially, this allows family members or guardians of an individual to file a petition with the courts to have a firearm taken away from someone who is believed to be a threat to themselves or others.

The source says this confiscation could make someone ineligible to have guns for a 12-month period.

Could This Happen In North Dakota?

According to the Bismarck Tribune, there are currently 31 states that have "Red Flag" laws. According to EveryTown.org, in 2019, a bill on this was introduced in North Dakota in 2019 (House bill 1537).

The bill was rejected in February of that year.

Despite the bill being struck down in 2019, it's not a stretch of the imagination to think that this could come up again in North Dakota.

What are your thoughts on this? Should North Dakota have a "Red Flag" gun law?
