When you first move to North Dakota, you might notice some things that seem a little quirky or strange. When I first moved here six years ago, I know I did.

If you're new here this might help you feel less crazy for noticing. I've put together a list of things that don't necessarily make sense.

Things that Don't Make Sense in North Dakota

1. The capital of North Dakota is Bismarck, but the largest city is Fargo.

Make it make sense.

2. Mountain Time vs Central

A portion of the state is in Mountain time, but it's mostly Central. Planning a trip to the western half of the state occasionally gets confusing.

3. Why do we have so many "World's Largest" statues?

We have the world's largest snowmobile, buffalo, Holstein cow, etc. Why are we so obsessed with large things?

4. North Dakotans constantly travel to Arizona.

Have you ever noticed that Arizona is the number one vacation destination North Dakotans like to go to? We go from one of the coldest, if not the coldest, states in the country to one of the driest and hottest. I get that it's one of the few places you can fly directly from Bismarck, but why Arizona? Why not Florida or Texas?

5. Some of us have southern accents

I get that we are a farming and ranching state, but how did so many of us develop this accent? I've heard ya'll, fixin, and holler.

It is a Southern accent in one of the most northern states. Like, huh?

Some but not all

Those are just some of the things I've noticed over the years. You may have noticed a few different things if you moved here from another state. If so, send us a message in the app and let us know.

Even though we might initially find some of the customs and practices in North Dakota a little strange, we eventually get used to them.
