UPDATE: Grand Forks AFB Fatal Shooting

On Monday (June 1), two Military Airmen at the Grand Forks Air Force Base died by shooting. We don't currently have a lot of information on the shooting, but there is a tragedy unfolding as more details are coming out. The family of one of the Airmen says that the shooting victim was also a victim of domestic violence.

KFYR-TV is reporting that the airmen, Natasha Raye Aposhian of Arizona and Julian Carlos Torres of Texas were the victims of the shooting. The post says that, at 4:30 AM on Monday (June 1), Air Force personnel responded to a Base dormitory after the shooting happened. Natasha was 21 and Julian was twenty. A statement made to Valley News Live (Fargo), by Natasha's family, says that she was the victim of domestic violence.

This makes the news of the shooting even more disturbing. According to Psychology Today, domestic violence situations rise during times of natural disaster. We've been forced to be home because of COVID-19, and that has to be agonizing and dangerous for people with unsafe living situations. Unfortunately, not everyone survives their abusers.

When the news was released about the early morning shooting that day, it was shocking to read. While we still don't have much information, the fact that Natasha was said to be a victim of domestic violence, makes the story even more heartbreaking. More updates will be posted as information about the investigation is released.

(June 1, 2020) - Tragedy has struck again in Eastern North Dakota. This time, there was a fatal shooting of two Airmen on the Grand Forks Air Force Base. In a Facebook post, the Base notified the public that a shooting happened early this morning.

According to a Facebook post from the Grand Forks Air Force Base, this morning (June 1). "A shooting incident at approximately 4:30 a.m. today has left two 319th Reconnaissance Wing active duty military members dead." The Base's post also says that there isn't a current risk to other personnel and that the incident is under investigation. At this time, there is not much more information on this morning's shooting.

The devastation that's been happening in our state, lately, is so surreal. The news in North Dakota never used to be so regularly horrific. All these terrible things are difficult to understand as someone who isn't close to the situations. So, I can't imagine how people feel when their lives are actually impacted by this pain and suffering most of us will only ever read about.
