Haunted Road Trip
Why not try doing a spooky tour of our state? I've compiled a list of some of the most haunted places you can visit in North Dakota.
1. Fort Abraham Lincoln
I'm sure you're familiar with this one, as it is so close to Mandan, North Dakota. Visit the Custer House or even the cemetery, and you'll feel a little something spooky in the air.
The Fort was an active military post during the 1870s. According to hauntedattraction.com, this was even before North Dakota gained statehood.
Fort Lincoln's first commanding officer was General George Custer. According to the source, men who occupied the fort often froze in their bunks, drowned in the river, and even got into fights at saloons, where they lost their lives. As a matter of fact, many believe that the number of lives lost in this area has made it to where the fort is now haunted.
Ghost tours have been offered at the recreation of General Custer's house, and now that has evolved into a haunted attraction at the site. During spooky season, we call it "The Haunted Fort" and brace for a good scare.
2. The North Dakota State Library
The building was built in the 1920s. Over the years, the building has been home to the state library, supreme court, and the Historical Society, according to hauntedhouses.com.
According to the source, strange sounds, negative energy, and even ghost sightings have all been reported at the library.
3. The Children's Museum
Located in Fargo, Yunker Farm is a brick farmhouse. According to hauntedrooms.com, the house dates back to 1976 and was once home to a woman named Elizabeth Yunker.
It is believed she haunts the farm; people claim to have seen her ghost and the ghost of a young child looming around the house. This, according to the source.
4. Medora Fudge & Ice Cream Depot
According to HauntedRooms.com, this may very well be one of the most haunted stops on your tour.
The source claims that once a year on the same day (The ghost's birthday), a spirit can be seen. Cold spots, noises, and other strange happenings are reported year-round.
Not much is known about the woman who is said to haunt the store.
5. St. Joseph's Hospital
This hospital is located in Dickinson, North Dakota. The hospital was built in 1911 and underwent several renovations and additions over the years. It was still a functioning/operational hospital up until 2014.
While in operation, employees reported that the elevator door leading to the morgue would often run up and down by itself. This, according to Dickinson58601.com
The source also claim people could hear strange noises such as moaning and laughter in the cafeteria, and running footsteps in several different halls.
A couple of years after the hospital closed, it became a seasonal haunted attraction, "The Haunted Hospital."
6. Harvey Public Library
According to HauntedRooms.com, this library sits where the Benz residence once stood. The source claims that a woman, Sophia Bentz, was bludgeoned to death in her sleep.
The incident took place in the home, and Sophia was discovered by her daughter.
The library was built sometime after, and librarians and those just stopping in to find a good read have claimed to experience unusual/paranormal activity.
The source claims the most haunted room is the librarian's office; that is where Sophia would have died.
