‘Food Robots’ Coming To This North Dakota Campus
According to Valley News Live, you will soon see robots rolling around the University of North Dakota campus.
The source says the University is working with a start-up tech company called Kiwibot. They say a food delivery system is something the school has been working on for over a decade, and they will be "Rolling" them out as early as next semester.
Robots Rolling
The source claims there will be somewhere between 15 and 20 robots on the campus.
Side note: If you're wondering how little robots could possibly get around campus with all the snow we get in the winter, that's fair. According to Valley News Live, the robots come equipped with snow tires.
Based off the pictures I've seen, they look like little ovens or microwaves with wheels.
How Do They Work
The source also explains that the cars get up to about 4 miles per hour, are self-propelled and use GPS technology to navigate the campus. The tech company, Kiwibot is partnered with Grubhub to bring food deliveries to campus dorms and housing.
The source indicates the school plans to start small and initially operate the robots out of Memorial Union, but if things go well, I'm sure they will be buzzing to and from all the buildings around campus.
Questions
While we're excited to see new technologies come to North Dakota, one does have to wonder a few things. What happens if a robot gets stuck with someone's food order? Who eats that cost?
What if you have a large food order that doesn't fit in one robot? -- They look small.
Other inquiries: how much do the robots cost? Repairs? Is this something greatly needed on the campus, or just a fun experiment? In any case, I can't wait to see the videos that will come out with these little things cruising around.
