2025 Report: North Dakota One Of The Worst States For Porch Pirates
Tis the season! North Dakotans have been going crazy ordering from Amazon this holiday season. Our mail carriers are working and freezing their butts off so we get all of our holiday gifts on time.
While this is the season for gift giving, happiness, family togetherness, and love, it's also the season for porch pirates. As a matter of fact, a study done by The Action Network identified which states face the highest likelihood of porch piracy in 2025, and North Dakota ranked incredibly high.
North Dakota One Of The Worst States For Porch Pirates
The source looked at stolen package reports, porch pirate search activity, and home larceny data to see how at-risk each state was, and North Dakota ranked as the 4th highest. Just in the past 3 months, 11 percent of our residents reported a stolen package.

Knowing this information, we need to protect ourselves from these bandits, but how?
Here are a couple of totally unserious but possibly helpful things you can try.
- Put a life-sized cardboard cutout of yourself in the window to spook potential pirates. Make it seem like you're always watching.
- Take all of your holiday decorations and turn getting to your packages into a sort of obstacle course. Your mailman might get annoyed, but I doubt porch pirates will take the time to maneuver around your yard; they're trying to get in and out of there without being seen.
How to Avoid Porch Pirates (Useful Tips)
Ok, on a more serious note, here are some useful tips.
- Ask your neighbor to collect your packages when you see they've been dropped off.
- When you can, schedule deliveries for when you're home.
- Require a signature; this is free for most carriers. This will ensure the packages are not left unattended.
- Get a video doorbell/Ring camera. If your package does get stolen, these might help you get a glimpse of the culprit.
- Have packages delivered to your work. If your workplace doesn't mind, this might be your safest bet.
- Sign up for carrier alerts. Track your packages so you know exactly when they arrive, so you can get home quickly to bring them inside.
These are just some of the steps you can take to keep your packages safe this holiday season. If you have a package stolen this year, call the police and file a claim with Amazon or the company you ordered from.
Happy holidays!
