NDSU Now Offering Taylor Swift English Class
Taylor Swift is undeniably a cultural force and professors at North Dakota State University (NDSU) feel this is something that should be explored academically.
Yes, her masterful wordplay and storytelling is now being integrated into academia.
According to Inforum, Adam Goldwyn, an English professor at NDSU, is offering a three-credit English course that focuses on Taylor Swift's songwriting/poetry.
Goldwyn has named the course "The Poetry of Rock."
Music IS Modern Poetry
I know many people will scoff and dismiss the idea, but if you think about it, Taylor Swift IS a poet and her songwriting is arguably the most widely recognized in the country right now.
While studying books is the most respected work to study, television shows and songwriting has slowly started gaining some traction.
So, what is the course all about?
According to the source, the class will delve into her lyrics and study the literary devices she uses --metaphors, symbolism, and allusion.
Imagine waking into class and finding out you assignment is to listen to "All Too Well," and "Blank Space." That beats Shakespeare any day.
I for one wish they had offered courses like this while I was attending college. *sigh*
If you look up the lyrics to her songs, as I just did, many of them read very much like poetry and you find little Easter eggs.
What do you think about this course being offered at NDSU? Do you think students will learn and take something away from it? Send us a message in the app and let us know what you think.
