Does North Dakota Have The Lowest Population In The U.S.?
We always hear people talk about the state of North Dakota as if it's pretty barren and uninhabited. This got me thinking and wondering about are population. Is it really that small? Sure, we have a lot of rural communities, but look at Fargo. Look at Grand Forks. Look at Bismarck. All these cities are buzzing with people.
North Dakota's Population Rank
The data World Population Review posted for 2025 might shock you. Despite our reputation for being open and empty and a sort of new frontier, the state doesn't have the lowest population in the nation.
The source says there are actually three states with fewer people than North Dakota; we rank as the fourth lowest in population.
Alaska, Wyoming, and Vermont have lower populations than the Peace Garden State.
Alaska is currently home to 743,756 U.S. citizens.
Wyoming only has 590,169 people living in the state.
Vermont currently has 648,248 residents.
States With The Highest Population 2025
I'm sure this is no shock to you, but in the year 2025, California still has the largest population of all 50 states. Currently, there are 39,663,800 people living in the state.
New York and Texas follow California with the highest populations in 2025.
North Dakota Growing
This is just proof that North Dakota really is growing. We have people moving here from other states and other countries to work in our factories and open new businesses. It seems like something new is opening in Bismarck every day.
We love to see the state of North Dakota grow and prosper.
