$500,000 Grant Will be Used to Demolish San Haven Sanatorium

The San Haven Sanatorium will soon be demolished.

According to KFGO, three Mandan, Dakota College of Bottineau, and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa have been awarded grant money for projects from the Environmental Protection Agency. The largest grant of $500,000 went to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and the funds will be used to demolish the San Haven Sanatorium near Dunseith. If you have yet to check out one of the creepiest locations in North Dakota, you better do it before it is gone.

Do you know of the sanatorium's creepy history?

There could totally be a season of American Horror Story about the San Haven Sanatorium. According to Ghosts of North Dakota, the hospital was built in 1912 for tuberculosis patients. Fun fact: my great grandmother spent time in the TB ward. It eventually evolved into a home for mentally handicapped patients before it was shut down in 1987. After it was boarded up, the property began to deteriorate from both nature and curious trespassers.

Hospitals tend to be creepy, but they are terrifying when they are closed up and decaying. My brother has told me about his experience when he visited the abandoned site. He is a skeptic when it comes to ghosts, but he says he could not rationalize what happened when he was there.

My brother and his friends all made it into the entrance of the building, but he was the only one that was not too creeped out to do a little exploring. He wandered off to check it out, thought that he was alone, but soon heard a couple of his friends talking behind him. So, he thought they got brave and joined him on the tour. My brother turned back to talk with them, but there was no one around. He got out of there as fast as he could, and all his friends were waiting for him outside of the hospital.
